If you're planning a photoshoot in Aruba, the single most important decision you'll make isn't your outfit or your location — it's the time.
Aruba sits just outside the hurricane belt, which means we get consistent sunshine nearly every day of the year. That's great for your vacation. But for photography, it means the light can be unforgiving if you don't know how to work with it.
Here's what you need to know.
Golden Hour: The Sweet Spot
The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset are what photographers call "golden hour." In Aruba, this is everything. The sun drops low, the light turns warm and soft, and the sky takes on those deep orange and pink tones that look incredible against the Caribbean water.
For most sessions — couples, families, engagement shoots — I recommend sunset golden hour. It's easier on everyone: you don't have to wake up at 5:30 AM, the beach is a little quieter than midday, and the light wraps around people naturally without creating harsh shadows or squinting.
Sunrise golden hour is beautiful too, especially if you want the beach almost entirely to yourself. Eagle Beach at 6 AM is a completely different world.
What Happens in the Middle of the Day
Midday sun in Aruba is direct overhead light — strong, flat, and harsh. It creates deep shadows under eyes and noses, blows out highlights, and makes everyone look a bit uncomfortable (because they are). Even with a professional flash setup to fill shadows, midday light is working against you.
I'll be honest: unless there's a specific reason to shoot midday, I don't recommend it for portrait sessions.
What This Means for Your Booking
Sunset sessions: Typically start 60–90 minutes before sunset. Check the time of year — in Aruba, sunset ranges from roughly 6:15 PM (winter months) to 7:00 PM (summer months).
Sunrise sessions: Start right at first light, around 6:00–6:30 AM depending on the season.
Build in buffer: I always plan to start a session slightly before golden hour begins so we're warm and ready when the light is perfect.
If you're visiting Aruba and want photos you'll actually love, book your session around the light — then choose your location. Not the other way around.
